Each year, we recognize two awards to honor those advancing our mission — through storytelling and through direct impact in the reproductive rights and justice space.

The Turnaway Stage Award

This award recognizes individuals or organizations that have gone above and beyond in bringing The Turnaway Play to their community - not just staging it, but doing so in a way that reflects the spirit of the Project: grounding the work in the research, creating space for meaningful conversation, building community through the storytelling, and reaching audiences who need it most.

The Turnaway Change Award

This award honors those working in the reproductive rights and justice space who have created measurable, meaningful impact in their community — whether through direct services, policy advocacy, community organizing, storytelling, or education.

Applications for the 2027 awards will open in March.

Meet the Winners

  • 2026 Winner: The Tulane Newcomb Center

    THE TURNAWAY STAGE AWARD


    The Turnaway Play came to New Orleans as part of a collaboration between Tulane University’s Newcomb Institute and its School of Liberal Arts, with input from community partners working in reproductive rights, health, and justice in the city. The three performances took place at Ashe Cultural Arts Center and were directed by the late R’Myni Watson and produced by Amy Chaffee. The production was part of a grant-funded series of explorations of reproductive justice through the humanities and arts led by Clare Daniel, Karissa Haugeberg, and Kate Baldwin

  • 2026 Winner: UCSF Bixby Center

    THE TURNAWAY CHANGE AWARD


    The Turnaway Play had a one-day-only staged reading at Brava Theater Center on April 6, presented by the UCSF Bixby Center for Global Reproductive Health. The performance drew a large and enthusiastic audience of more than 250 people and raised over $20,000 for the Center's rapid response fund, supporting the essential work of their community in these tumultuous times. The reading was directed by Tammy Kremer, whose vision, creativity, and hard work brought the production to life.
